Air Vise Jaw Removal and Installation Guide:

Air Vise vs Traditional CNC Vise
Air Vise vs Traditional CNC Vise

Traditional CNC vises have been the standard in machine shops for decades. They are reliable, simple, and widely used across many applications. However, as machining evolves toward higher efficiency and automation, their limitations become more noticeable.

Pneumatic air vises are designed to address those limitations by reducing load time, improving consistency, and supporting automation-ready workflows.

Setup Time Comparison

With a traditional vise, each part requires manual tightening. This adds time to every cycle and introduces variability depending on the operator.

With a pneumatic vise, clamping is actuated instantly using air pressure. This eliminates manual effort and significantly reduces load and unload time.

Consistency and Repeatability

Manual vises rely on operator feel to determine clamping force. This can lead to variation from part to part.

Pneumatic vises apply consistent clamping force every cycle, improving repeatability and reducing the risk of part movement.

Automation Compatibility

Traditional vises are not designed for automation. They require manual interaction, which limits their use in robotic or unattended machining environments.

Pneumatic vises integrate easily with automation systems, making them ideal for machine tending and lights-out manufacturing.

When a Traditional Vise Still Makes Sense

- Low volume jobs with minimal repetition
- Simple setups where speed is not critical
- Applications where air supply is not available

When an Air Vise Makes Sense

- Production runs with frequent loading
- Shops looking to reduce setup time
- Automation and robotic machine tending
- Improving consistency across operators

Why Shops Are Switching to Air Vise

Air Vise systems are designed to reduce wasted time between cycles and improve overall efficiency. By removing manual clamping and introducing consistent actuation, shops can increase output without increasing labor.

If you're looking to improve throughput, consistency, and automation readiness, pneumatic workholding offers a clear advantage.

How do you recommend cutting the jaws?
Use the supplied 0.032 shim inserted between jaws faces and close vise.

Use a graduated depth cut to start, plunge cutting is not recommended.
Multiple passes are acceptable for clean up if required/desirable.
General guidelines for cutting 7075-T6 aluminum are recommended.
No additional compensation for anodizing required.

Harvey Tool has excellent recommendations for feeds and speeds for cutting aluminum.
